Solgar Vitamin D3 Chewable Tablets are great tasting strawberry and banana flavour and ideal for those who have difficulty swallowing capsules or tablets. Each tablet provides 1000iu of vitamin D3, providing an easy way to meet the daily requirement of this nutrient.
The Vitamin D3 in this product is the same as that produced by the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight. The absorption of this important vitamin may be reduced as we age. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is needed for normal growth and development of bones in children and to help maintain normal teeth and bones in adults. It also helps support the body’s normal immune system.
Vitamin D3, the so called 'Sunshine Vitamin' is unique among essential nutrients in that it transforms from a vitamin to a hormone in the body. This active form of vitamin D targets approximately 200 genes in a variety of tissues, meaning that it has many possible modes of action. Well known for its role in regulating calcium levels, vitamin D3 is now attracting attention for its other roles and benefits to the body. These include the regulation of the immune system, brain function, cellular and cardiovascular health, muscle function as well as providing an anti-inflammatory action.
Vitamin D deficiency is thought to a ect at least half the UK’s white population, up to 90% of the multi-ethnic population and a quarter of children, possibly related to our distance from the equator and a low dietary intake, as oily fish, organ meats and eggs are the chief dietary sources. Defi ciency in this vitamin may be associated with higher incidences of diabetes, tuberculosis, multiple sclerosis and rickets.
The Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) reported a four-fold increase in the number of rickets cases they have seen in the past 15 years, prompting the Department of Health (DoH) into recommending supplementary vitamin D products for the following, most at risk groups:
- All pregnant and breastfeeding women, especially teenagers
and young women
- Older people aged 65 years and over
- Infants and young children under 5 years of age
- People who have low or no exposure to the sun
- People who have darker skin, as their bodies are not able to
make as much vitamin D
As a food supplement for adults and children 4 years of age and up, chew one (1) tablet daily, preferably at mealtime, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed directions for use.
If you are pregnant, nursing, taking any medications or have any medical condition, please consult your healthcare practitioner before taking this product. This product requires adult supervision and is not to be dispensed by children.
