PREGNANCY A healthy diet is an important part of a healthy lifestyle at any time, but is especially vital if you're pregnant or planning a pregnancy. The UK National Health Service (NHS) recommends women should take 400 micrograms of folic acid each day, from before pregnancy until the end of the first trimester (first 12 weeks). It also advises taking a vitamin D supplement of 10mcg / 400iu throughout pregnancy and while breastfeeding, although this amount may vary, depending on the time of year and according to ethnic background.

Some nutritionists recommend taking a fish oil or equivalent supplement, together with DHA, which the baby draws heavily from the mother for its own cerebral growth. DHA is a fatty acid that helps with the formation of the brain. But seek advice here if in doubt. Some products combine the two.
